Overview

Individuals certified under the ASAB accreditation scheme are required to pay an annual registration fee, demonstrate that they possess current and ongoing professional indemnity insurance and submit a renewal of accreditation form and summary of clinical work undertaken over the past twelve months. In addition, they must assess their professional needs and undertake at least thirty hours of diverse activities that will contribute to their continuing development as a clinical animal behaviourist.

Every five years, certified individuals are required to submit a record of the annual activities they have undertaken as part of their continuing professional development and a detailed summary of their ongoing experiences of clinical work. This should include a breakdown, by species, of the type of cases seen.

By demanding that certified clinical animal behaviourists undertake an annual assessment of their professional needs and undertake activities that will contribute to their continuing professional development (CPD), the accreditation committee acknowledges the role of CPD in ensuring ongoing professional competency and practice and in developing public confidence.

Individuals who have undertaken less than 30 hours of CPD activities or who have seen 10 or less cases in each of three years prior to the five yearly review will be asked to provide case histories to support the case for renewal of their certification.

Annual Renewal

  1. Submit a renewal of accreditation form and summary of clinical work undertaken over the past twelve months
Please complete Form A, listing the number of cases seen in the previous twelve months for each of the species you possess certification for. If less than 10 cases have been seen, then please briefly indicate the reason for this.

  2. Pay certification renewal fee (£50)
Enclose a cheque for £50, made payable to 'ASAB Accreditation Ltd'.

  3. Demonstrate current and ongoing professional indemnity insurance
Send a photocopy of any insurance certification or letter from an employer confirming cover.

  4. Conduct a personal assessment of professional needs and undertake at least thirty hours of diverse activities that will contribute to continuing professional development
At least thirty hours of diverse activities that will contribute to an individual's continuing professional development as a clinical animal behaviourist need to have been undertaken every twelve months. The activities claimed must be from three or more of the categories listed in Form B. At least one of the activities must be from categories 1-3 and no more than five hours can be claimed for category 6. The topics listed should be treated only as examples of some of those activities that might be undertaken. Whilst it is not a requirement, it is strongly recommended that an individual complete an activity review form (Form C) after each CPD activity that will be claimed. Any certificates that support involvement in the CPD to be claimed should also be kept.

When considering CPD activities undertaken it is important to focus on what has been learned and absorbed into current practice from the activity, rather than simply the hours attained. Thirty hours is a minimum; many certified practitioners will undertake more.

Forms should be sent to the Secretary of the ASAB Accreditation Committee.

Five yearly renewal

In addition to the above, every five years each certified clinical animal behaviourist must:

  1. Submit details of the diverse activities that have been undertaken over the past five years that have contributed to their continuing professional development
Please submit, for each of the last five years, a completed Form D detailing the CPD activities undertaken. In addition, please submit supporting activity review sheets (Form C) for each of the CPD activities claimed in the last three years and any supporting certificates/documentation. If, in any of the last three years, less than 30 hours of CPD or no activities from categories 1-3 have been undertaken, then please detail the reasons for the shortfall.

  2. Submit a detailed review of clinical work undertaken over the past twelve months
Please complete Form E, listing the number and type of cases seen in the previous twelve months for each of the species you possess certification for. If less than 10 cases have been seen in the last twelve months, then please indicate the reason for this.
