Let's Ask The Animals
Let's Ask the Animals introduces animal behaviour into primary school teaching. It uses some of the sequences from Stimulus Response - hens running obstacle courses and learning from videos, pigs operating computers, etc - in the context of the primary school curriculum. Many of the physical and behavioural needs farm animals share with humans are demonstrated in a child-friendly way.
New footage includes a graphic illustration of the speed of growth of today's broiler chickens. During a 7-week period, a video camera at Bristol University recorded and contrasted the side-by-side growth of a broiler chick and an egg-layer.
For ASAB members the cost of the video is £5 including postage and packing; for non-ASAB members, the video costs £10 including postage and packing.

Stimulus Response
Stimulus Response looks at behaviour in farm animals. It was professionally produced for ASAB, with funding from the Matthew Eyton Trust. It is designed to be appropriate for the Science National Curriculum at Key Stage 4 (14-16 year olds) and for A-Level teaching, in both Biology and Psychology.
In the video, pigs show how they perceive stimuli in the first moments of life. Hens run obstacle courses and show that they have the mental co-ordination to learn from videos. Calves make us aware of their internal as well as external effectors, and we see the ways in which these animals are able to respond to the stimuli in their environment.
ASAB is pleased to be able to report that over 3000 copies of Stimulus Response have been sold since January 1995. Foreign language versions are now being developed and Michael Dockery (address above) would be glad to hear from ASAB members with knowledge of the school curricula needs of teachers in other countries.
For ASAB members the cost of the video is £5 including postage and packing; for non-ASAB members, the video costs £10 including postage and packing.
A FREE copy of the DVD can be obtained if a school completes the request form sent out by Edexcel. Note that the request form should go to the ASAB Education Officer (address above), and not the ASAB Membership Secretary.
Nicky Hayes has produced a set of teacher notes (aimed at those teaching A-Level Psychology) to accompany the video. The 12-page booklet offers suggestions for discussion topics, small group and class exercises, debate and experiment. There are also some additional exercises for students, which can be photocopied. The notes and exercises are included free with each copy of Stimulus Response purchased; they can also be bought separately at £1 per copy.

Vigilance Behaviour in Barnacle Geese
Neil Fraser has produced a video for ASAB titled Vigilance Behaviour in Barnacle Geese. The video is a practical exercise for undergraduates in which students watch 21 flocks of geese which range in size from 1-20 birds. The students collect data on the frequency and duration of vigilance of one bird in the flock as it grazes. The analysis of the data allows them to determine how vigilance changes as a function of flock size.
We have recently re-written the background notes which are provided with the video. The notes now contain a check sheet for students to use when they carry out the exercise. The video costs £10, including postage and packing.
